Andy Burnham Would Not Lack Democratic Legitimacy

With Andy Burnham almost guaranteed to replace Keir Starmer as prime minister of the UK, there are rumbling criticisms of his lack of “democratic legitimacy”. Burnham may lack a mandate to govern and will need a fresh election to gain said mandate, so it goes.

While there are also reportedly some calls from within the Labour party for a snap election, the criticisms of the process of Burnham’s appointment more so just seem to represent convenient politics from those who are currently polling well (i.e. Reform), who would benefit from fresh elections.

A snap election could be a mistake and calls for one are based on a complete misrepresentation of the processes of the current democratic system.

We have examples of both from the Conservatives’ recent years in government.
